Some Secrets for Growing a Beautiful Apartment Garden

So many people mistakenly believe that, if you are an apartment dweller, it’s not possible to have a garden. There is not a lot of space, and some areas are common with other people. You can’t always know that your plants will be safe. Many apartments have a balcony, but that’s not as common as it used to be. People who love plants and enjoy gardening stay away from living in apartments because of this perceived limitation. Excuses aside, it’s not that difficult, when an apartment is your home, to find a way to tend to your own mini garden. In this article we are going to teach you how to garden in an apartment, or in a very limited living space.

If you’re in the market for a new apartment or condo, narrow your search to those that have either a balcony or a patio. If you can find an apartment where the balcony faces the sun, that would be even better. Your plants will grow better if they at least get a little direct sunlight each day, even if they are shade-loving varieties. If this isn’t an option, don’t lose hope. If you take the time to learn about artificial sunlight, you will discover quickly that you have a lot of options. If there is any way possible, however, let your plants bask in direct, full sunlight for part of the day.

When you grow plants inside your home, you have to remember to fertilize them more often than your plants that are outside exposed to the elements. Outdoors plants pick up a lot of nutrients from the air and birds flying overhead. You can buy extra fertilizer or you can start your own composting bin under your sink. Actually, composting is always a good idea. You can make a great product simply using your kitchen scraps, with the exception of meat and bones and a few other products. There will be less kitchen scraps to dispose of, you won’t have to buy fertilizer, and a kitchen compost system doesn’t take up much space.

Have you thought about the merits of using hanging plants? Hanging plants are a great way to garden when you have limited space available for your containers. The weight of larger plants, and the size of their containers that will let their roots spread out, make them poor choices for hanging plants. But you won’t have a problem finding numerous plants that are small enough to put in hanging planters with attractive, small containers. Hanging plants are also a great way to keep your pets and kids out of the containers, which means that they have a greater success rate than the plants you would grow in containers kept on the floor or small stands. Do you love to garden, but your apartment or home is small? Cheer up! There are a lot of possibilities open to you that you probably haven’t thought about. You won’t be able to convince everyone of this, of course, however true it might be. Just because you don’t have a yard doesn’t mean that you can’t ever grow plants of your own. Container gardening allows you to put plants in containers anywhere you want around your house. You can tuck them on a shelf in the kitchen, in the bathroom, or on a sunny windowsill. You now have enough information to plan, and implement, your own container
garden. A little bit of research will help you turn up plenty more. If you read our tips, listen to what the experts in your nursery tell you, and do some independent research, you’ll be off to a flying start having your very own container garden.
